Peasant Literature Amidst War and Its Role in Colombia's Peace Building: The Case of Carranga

Abstract

The article studies the role of peasant literatures in territories affected by the armed conflict in Colombia, focusing on the carranga of the Cordillera Oriental region. The text analyzes the way in which forms of Medieval and Renaissance literature survive in the territories to generate texts that are appropriate in the regional communities and become cultural heritage bearing identity and generators of a cultural memory about the armed conflict in the regions. Likewise, it reflects on the way in which these traditional and popular expressions of oral literature are involved in sociopolitical situations that affect communities, in order to create and support peacebuilding processes in the territories.

Adrián Farid Freja de la Hoz, Universidad Pedagógica y Tecnológica de Colombia / Universidad de los Andes

Researcher of the oral literatures of Colombia and Latin America, his book La décima espinela en el Pacífico Colombiano received in 2010 the National Prize of Literature, City of Bogotá, in the essay mode. In that same year he received the Otto de Greiff National Prize for his graduate work on oral literature from the Bolívar savanna. In 2015 he published the book La literatura oral en Colombia. Romances, coplas y décimas en el Pacífico y el Caribe colombianos. He has been the winner of the International Circulation Grant from the Ministry of Culture to socialize his research. He is a Doctor of Literature from the Universidad de los Andes and currently works as Associate Professor and Researcher at the Pedagogical and Technological University of Colombia in the area of literature.
