Abstract

This text addresses the identity building processes in Afro-Colombian music, using the debut album by Anne Swing—recorded under the artistic leadership of   palenquero musician Viviano Torres and released in 1988—as a case study. In the first section, the paper discusses the concept of identity; in the second section, it delves in the album’s history and contents; the last section analyzes its relation with palenquero and Caribbean cultures—along with the African imaginaries present in champeta music. By doing so, this article explores how these relations are conditioned by contexts of ethno-diversity and how they can be read under the notion of "strategic essentialism.”
