Abstract

Geographer and anarchist thinker Élisée Reclus visited Nueva Granada between 1855 and 1857, looking for a place to establish a Socialist community. Although his utopian endeavor failed, in his account he configures some of his political notions, such as his defense of vegetarianism and free union, or the criticism of both land regime and racism. In this essay I analyze his relationship with some of Nueva Granada’s men of letters as well as the role of this trip in his future anarchist thought.
