Abstract

As the first film by Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul to be produced in a foreign country, Memoria (2021) serves as a reflection on the construction of historical memory and empathy within a transnational context. In addition to the contrast between the countryside and the city, Memoria deploys a slow, contemplative cinematography to examine the multiple temporalities of violence in Colombia. Filmed in 2019, Weerasethakul’s drama illustrates the dynamics of multidirectional memory, as conceptualized by Michael Rothberg —a model that explores how different historical memories intersect in the public sphere to challenge dominant narratives and propose scenarios of solidarity.
