Abstract

In El arte del contrapunto y la paradoja, María Margarita Malagón-Kurka examines the work of five Colombian artists—Juan Fernando Herrán, Juan Manuel Echavarría, Clemencia Echeverri, Óscar Muñoz, and Doris Salcedo—whose productions explore the tension between finitude and transcendence, memory and absence. Through mediums such as photography, video, and installation, these works address social and existential issues linked to the armed conflict, environmental destruction, and the experience of trauma, while exalting the resilience of life. The analysis highlights the documentary character of vestige present in materialities and formats, which evoke the "presence of an absence" and generate a dialectic between transience and permanence.
